By Brittney Swanson

Relocating data centers is a daunting taks that has to be done by certified server movers. Their expertise could not be disregarded as damages or loss of important data can have drastic effects to institutions. Careful considerations will be checked first to be assured of having a reliable service provider. However, the client also has his role to play to make the procedure safer and smoother.

An estimate of the budget will need to be met first. To set this, IT experts and upper management have to coordinate. The upper management will be there to approve the budget while IT personnel will need to be consulted with regards to tasks that they may need to do before moving. Time have to be considered by these personnel so as to see if the budget is enough to meet needs. Mistakes and delays can also happen should the budget affect he timeframe of the moving process.

Data access needs to be secure. Data recovery plans have to be prepared. Even with the service of a professional mover, disasters may happen such as failure of backups or power shortage. To help decide, possible disasters and their risks have to be weighed. Specific strategies have to be made for each possible disaster. Those that are more damaging will be given top priority. This could be assessed by how they affect operations.

These service providers should be coordinated with information regarding location and other relevant data related to the moving process. Along with them, staff and other personnel should be informed of the move. They also have to be made aware of how critical this will be, and they should get to understand their roles regarding the movement no matter how small these may seem to be.

Inventories are necessary. Hardware, including software, requires accountability. Serial numbers are going to be listed. Labels are also required in packaging items to help with identification. The service personnel are to be informed of them so they can handle properly these items.

There is a considerable risk of acquiring physical damages involved in the process. That would call for reviewing and preparing of warranties. Insurance policies specially those by the handlers are to be checked also. The whole moving process need to be covered in all aspects. That includes material and employee liability insurances.

Hardware can be replaced easily. However, data is hard to recover. Back up for data is then imperative. The information that they carry are vital to the operations of institution and so much is at stake. Proper handling of hardware containing them should be followed and they have to be separated from hardware containing original data. This ensures their protection should incidents like fire, for example, happen to the place originals are stored. Frequent checking have to be done specially right before transfer to ensure they are still carrying important data and are still in good condition.

Make sure that the new data center fits for its purpose and will meet expectations. This needs to be planned before any moves. Several aspects such as power, cooling, security, and cabling have to be met.

When having data centers moved, professional server movers should be called upon. Their experience and knowledge of the task make them more reliable and efficient in doing it. Their clients also have roles to do in order to make the moving process more secure, and this involves necessary preparations.
