Durable Computers Protect Law Enforcement

By Allyson Westcot

The Border Patrol in America face danger every day while doing their jobs. They regularly call upon local law enforcement agencies to provide them with help. Law enforcement in Luna County, New Mexico, is close enough that calls come often. It's critical that all the police can be reached quickly and can communicate with one another to share info. This really is true for everyday law enforcement but it becomes far more vital when the Border Patrol contacts them for help.

If the requirement was only to send officials who might be in the office out into the field to help secure the border, communication and mobile computing wouldn't be as important. But officials are sometimes already in the field working to keep the county safe. To reduce bureaucracy and keep all police who are out in the field able to reply at a minute's notice, their police cars have been fitted out with trusty Panasonic Toughbook 31 laptops.

Law enforcement has already got a dispatch system, where a dispatch officer contacts each unit to announce them of any situations that need their attention. But it's even more efficient, and serves many other purposes, for officers to have durable laptops in their automobiles. Not only does that facilitate better communication, but they can work on reports, get instant alerts and do their jobs better, all while not having to worry about their computers breaking down.

The Luna County laptops were set up with mobile broadband thru a cell telephone provider. Wi-Fi isn't far-reaching and reliable enough for mobile law enforcement, so always having an available broadband Internet connection to get online, send emails and communicate is vital. The addition of broadband service turns it from a portable computer to a transportable communications device.

That connection lets law enforcement to get up to date reports from the office and from other officers. When they can be connected this easily, it not only permits them to do a better job of securing the border, but it also helps keep them safer.
