Top Web Design Mistakes You Must Avoid

By Kelly Montagna

You are sure to come across some unattractive websites if you use the web regularly. While quality web design isn't difficult, many website owners fail to achieve it. It's important to create a website that is user friendly. No doubt, you want to ensure that visitors come back again. You'll drive visitors to your competition with a poorly designed website. To ensure you design your website the right way, here is a look at some of the top website design mistakes you need to avoid.

Mistake #1 - Problems with Navigation

One of the biggest mistakes to avoid when designing your website is providing poor navigation. If visitors are unable to get around your site easily, they probably will simply leave and find another website. You'll keep visitors on your site longer if you offer great navigation. While you want to keep navigation simple, it needs to be very effective as well. Remember to use user friendly navigation because it can make or break your website.

Mistake #2 - Visitors Can't Figure Out Where They Are

Don't make visitors wonder where they've landed. Each page on your site should clearly show visitors that they are on your website. This is especially important when visitors land on pages without first coming to your home page. You'll also want to link each site page to the main home page.

Mistake #3 - Very Long Pages

As you work on your site's web design, make sure you avoid overly long pages that make people scroll. Users don't like scrolling unless something great is below. If possible, try to split up long pages. Navigation and content options must be located at the top of the page if you aren't able to split up the page.

Mistake #4 - Slow Download Times

Most internet users don't have much patience today. Visitors want information fast. This means that slow download times are going to be costly. If your website takes a long time to load, most visitors will simply leave and find another website that meets their needs. Make sure your site loads quickly as you work on the website design for your website. This can be done by reducing image file sizes and by limiting the number of images used on each page of your site.

Mistake #5 - Overdoing the Ads

Ads are not the main reason visitors are visiting your website. Ads are great for making money but they can become a distraction. It's okay to use ads, but focus on your site content instead of your ads. Content and ads should be well balanced too.

Mistake #6 - Information that is Outdated

Last, failing to update information is another big web design mistake you must avoid. No one wants to view outdated information on your site. Make sure you review your site on a regular basis to get rid of outdated information.

Creating an appealing website is important. Create a website that visitors can easily use by avoiding some of these big design mistakes.
