How Space MMO Culture Is Developed

By Aaliyah I. Herzog

The culture of space MMO games may seem odd to people who are not fans of this unique gaming genre but in reality that culture is growing rapidly as more and more players log on. MMORPG's now represent a notable chunk of the global gaming market, accounting for millions of dollars in sales and month subscriptions. One of the special challenges that online games present to developers is that the gaming environment must stay active and fresh 24 hours a day in order to support players who are logging on in a variety of countries. MMORPG's bring together many gamers and create a new community with its own culture based around the game they enjoy together, complete with its own terminology and customs.

Gamers can easily be drawn away from a popular space MMO game if its content were to suddenly become dull, too predictable, or just overly cyclical; constant changes must be made. One of the ways they accomplish this is by buffing and nerfing specific character classes in the game; character classes refer to the roles that each character assumes during game play. If a character class is bettered and new skills are given to it that could give that class considerable advantages over others, it is said to have been buffed. While certain classes are buffed, others are nerfed in that their skill sets are limited and some of their advantages are taken away through changes to the game.

The grand portion of space MMO games feature progression systems, such as leveling up, that allow player to keep track of their progress in the game. Grinding, a word used frequently in online games, is a system of leveling up through which you simply hunt down one enemy after another until your experience grants you a new level. While it is not usually a favorite part of online gaming, grinding is considered to be one of the basic elements of all MMORPG's and is a very common term amongst gamers.

The basic feature of online games is their social features, such as in game chat systems that let players talk to one another as they play. The chat system is a realm where gaming culture can definitely be seen since there are always abbreviated ways of discussing items, quests, and other in-game topics.

A few non-gamers may be surprised to hear that space MMO cultures exist, but the reality is that the community of gamers is very strong. When you begin playing an MMORPG, you might be surprised by how quickly you become a part of the culture, too.
