Ways Space Game Designs Differ

By Magdalen P. Oga

Space game MMORPG's and RPG's are both recognized as a few of the most popular video games currently available on the market. Role playing games, usually referred to as RPG's, have been popular for decades; modern RPG video games are still based off of concepts from board and dice RPG games such as Dungeons and Dragons. As technology has gotten better during the last decade, particularly in relation to the Internet, so has the way in which many people enjoy role playing and space games. Ever since the advent of MMORPG's, or massively multiplayer online role playing games, there have been many changes in the way players think of their favorite games. Which differences will players observe between classic RPG's on a gaming console and an online MMORPG?

Some of the essential concepts of all RPG's, and space game MMORPG's include item collection through looting, character customization, and character leveling. There is less chance for the player to choose their own path in RPG's on consoles, however, that have very linear story progress. Game events are quite strictly controlled and, while you may be able to make some minor choices about what your character does, major decisions are unchangeable.

This is starkly different, however, if you are playing a space game prepared as an MMORPG that allows you to interact with hundreds of other players. Joining up with other players changes the dynamic of gameplay in a very unique way and the game itself is always being updated by the developing studio. Such games really feel like you are playing the role of your character because, instead of teaming up with predictable computer characters, you are working together with real people. It is nice to experience freedom to go and do as you wish in the game world instead of having to stick to a set storyline and only work together with the game's assigned characters.

The considerable majority of role playing games for normal gaming consoles have been one player games with no multiplayer support or modes. This social feature of MMORPG's is part of the reason for which they have quickly gained popularity around the world.

While they are different in some ways, space game MMORPG's and RPG's are both popular. The thrill of advancing through a fun MMORPG together with friends and other gamers is sure to keep you enticed as you play such games.
