Hiring an IT manager vs. using an external IT support firm

By Gail Sail

If you are attempting to plan the IT support provision for your company, it is likely that you are currently facing a big decision between internal and external IT support. There are benefits to both options, appointing an in-house IT manager or hiring an external IT support company, but which will be best for your business?

Before you can decide which to choose, it is important to bear a few key points in mind. Cost is one of the most crucial, as it is when making any type of business decision.

You need to ask yourself which will be the most cost-effective - a team of IT specialists on your staff, working full-time on full pay, or an external team of experts you can call on to tackle the occasional problem? The benefit of the latter option is that you can be assured that you have IT support even out of working hours, provided you choose a company that operates round the clock.

If you worry about giving up control of your IT systems to an external firm, and this is something that many businesses worry about, there is a solution. You need to find a local company (i.e. a computer support Manchester company if your business is based in Manchester) to work with and more importantly, one with which you feel you can build up a strong working relationship.

Depth of technical knowledge and experience is another benefit you can enjoy when you outsource your IT support needs to an external company. As skilled and knowledgeable as your in-house IT specialist may be, there may still be situations that he or she is unable to deal with.

The technology industry is a very fast-paced one, and it can change all the time. For this reason, the technical needs of your company may be better served by a team of engineers, each with their own skills, experience and knowledge.
