Graphic Design: Finding A Good Designer

By Victori Ranalden

There goes a common saying that images are worth a thousand words. That automatically increases the worth of graphic artists, doesn't it? With good reason, too. Graphic designers may be dime a dozen; good ones, those who understand how to create good graphics, aren't. It can also cost significantly in terms of time and efforts so it becomes even more important to find a good one in the first shot.

What exactly differentiates good designers from the bad ones? That's subjective. It's difficult to put in words, too. You just know when you stumble upon good design. It tells you that whoever created it has put in a lot of hard work. In fact, for you to find a good designer, you yourself need to have good taste.

There are a few tips that can help you find the right designer for your needs. We will look at some of them:

Check out their work: It's extremely important to thoroughly check the designer's portfolio before working with them. Check their work and see if you like it. It will tell you the nuances of their work as well: whether or not they pay attention to details, whether their work is something you actually like, etc.

Get in touch: Go ahead, get in touch with them and explain your ideas in as much details as you can. It's important to be detailed, even if it takes time, because the details will help the designer understand what you want. Get their ideas as well; they are experienced and in most cases, will have some inputs for you.

Look online: Many, in fact most, of them have a website online. You can look for graphic design companies that are in your vicinity. For instance, if you want to hire someone in Denver, do a lookup for 'denver graphic design' and you will find many designers.

Doing it this way not only gives you a good chance of finding the person you are looking for, it's also relatively easier and much faster. Even if you want to talk to a designer before hiring him/her, that's fine. Look for someone in your locality; you don't want to work with a remote designer in that case.

So, when it comes to hiring designer, if I put it simply, you have to pull your socks and do your research. Don't cut corners. Don't take the short route. It is imperative to spend time to find the right designer, someone who fulfills your criteria. It'll definitely be worth the effort you put in at the end.
