Details On The Hard Disk

By Peter Garrilloid

You are one who puts much of your time and effort using your computer and going online among all the other gadgets in your house. Because of this you should learn more about the computer. And what better way to learn about the computer than learning about one of its more important parts - the hard disk drive.

The hard disk drive is known as a storage device. It is more specifically created to keep and retrieve digital information with the use of rapidly rotating discs coated with magnetic material. They are called such because of the hard platter present in the device. It was invented in the year 1950 by IBM as backup storage equipment for computers. The hard disks at this time are very big, with a diameter of about twenty inches and storage capability of only a few megabytes. Since the hard disk's emergence, it has undergone a number of improvements. Nonetheless, there still remain aspects of the hard disk that are constant.

One of these things is the amazing capacity of the hard disk which is measured in unit prefixes. Aside from that the hard disk's performance which is calculated by the number of times it takes to move the heads to a file, the time it takes for the file to move under its head and lastly, the time by which the file is moved is very notable. Other qualities of the hard disk is that, compared with other storage devices is that it can retain data even when it's not on. Another thing is that you don't have to browse through data in a particular order because with its random-access method, you can just select which data you want to retrieve. Hard disk can also help back-up important information that you have in your computer or laptop.

Even with all these qualities, the hard disk's lead in the computer world is still endangered because of the emergence of the flash memory. But, there's really no cause for any alarm because many computer manufacturers still see the indispensable importance of the device.

Now that's about all the basic things you can learn about the hard disk and you can already somehow call yourself familiar with the components of the computer you use every single day.
