Is Star Wars: The Old Republic the World of Warcraft Killer Everyone Hoped For?

By Adam Morgan

Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is truly a sight to behold, set in the expansive Star Wars Universe. This game takes cues from many others, including Mass Effect, for its color scheme and style, resulting in great beauty on the screen. Upon loading the game, you will immediately recognize the Star Wars Universe. It will be as if you've stepped through a portal.

Incredible in its scope and ambition, SWTOR is a hot new MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing games) for the PC. Star Wars: The Old Republic breaks new ground by incorporating a massive, choice-based story line into the game, thus moving away completely from the traditional MMO.

In WOW and most other MMOs, players get the same situations over and over and there is really nothing to differentiate the experience that players have. In contrast, The Old Republic allows each player to truly experience a different game and story, unique to them alone.

Even better, this game is going Free to Play, meaning you will no longer have to pay the $15 monthly subscription fee. This will save you a bundle every month and you'll still be able to play with your friends and act out your Star Wars universe fantasies in game. The free gameplay will last you until Level 50, which is quite a substantial amount of play. On top of that, the price of the game is dropping to only $15, and you will get a free month of premium access with that.

The creators of SWTOR are always updating the game and adding tons of new content. For example, they are about to introduce Cartel Coins, which allows you to unlock game items and get new features.

SWTOR is still new and fresh, but it has matured since its release in December 2011. So you will now be able to enjoy the game with others like you, without the annoying bugs or annoying people. Newcomers are welcomed by the true, dedicated, and loyal fans who have stuck around. This is the best possible situation for new players.

The Old Republic is massive, with dozens of planets to explore and space combat mini games. That part is unfortunately not as fleshed out as many had hoped. Still, even with that minor downside there is a whole lot to like about this game.

8 different character classes are available for you to choose from. The Republic or the Empire. Your choice will affect how the game unfolds for you. Dancing around with a lightsaber, slashing creates left and right. If this interest you, then this game is most definitely for you. There is even more choice for you once you've reached Level 10. Then you will be able to specialize into one of 16 advanced classes. Your original character class selection determines your choices for the advanced classes.

Depending on if you start a new game as the Empire or the Republic you will start on a different planet with a different set of powers and abilities. Whichever side you choose you will have a blast exploring this massive and dangerous world. You will never look at MMOs the same way ever again after you have played a few hours of Star Wars: The Old Republic.
