Rugged Technology and Mobile Workers

By Allyson Westcot

Experts believe that most workers will be mobile by the end of the next decade, and that up to 1 billion folks will work remotely in the future. As the technology keeps improving, there'll be rather more options for mobile workers than there are now. Whether or not it is trekking thru a rainforest for research or checking a patient's medical records in a speeding ambulance, durable laptops can get it done.

Petrol and Natural Gas

Many employees are mobile. Someone who checks derricks, for instance, should have rugged technology. An ultra-rugged tablet would be perfect for this sort of work. When there could be liquids or gasses present in a no-spark area, a completely sealed rugged laptop or tablet computer is a complete must. This could permit employees the ability to communicate without cellular phones, because these phones can spark and become a hazard in certain situations.

Healthcare

Rugged technology is necessary for infirmaries, ORs and other clinical settings. The gear must be sterilized and sealed so it can't harbor bacteria that would make patients sick. A computer with a touch-sensitive screen is ideal for fast work in ERs and ambulances, as well. Mobile clinical workers who go from place to place checking on patients can keep their records up-to-date with rugged technology, too.

Army and Law Enforcement

Peace officers use durable computers in their cars to do everything from running license plates to creating reports. They can get recent information on fugitives, emergencies, crimes-in-progress and arrest warrants. Other technology permits them to monitor traffic speed, film around their vehicles and keep communities safer. Army units use rugged technology for obvious reasonsâ€"regular computers couldn't stand up to the abuse that rugged technology handles with no problems.

Emergency Teams

Whether groups need to rush to a fire or groups need to organize a response to a flood, tremor or other natural catastrophe, rugged technology keeps communication open and information flowing. It's crucial that laptops don't fail during these emergency situations. With sturdy computers, the rate of failure is so small that emergency teams can depend on the technology.
